Restaurant Jordnær

Restaurant Jordnær is a seafood tasting-menu restaurant in the Gentofte Hotel, in the suburb of Gentofte just north of Copenhagen. The Danish name means down to earth.

The married couple Tina and Eric Kragh Vildgaard opened it at the end of April 2017 in the newly renovated hotel. Eric runs the kitchen, and Tina leads the dining room and the wine as restaurant manager and sommelier. The idea for the restaurant came from Tina, who asked her husband what he wanted to do with his life; his answer was a restaurant of their own. For Eric the name stands for being grounded and human, a fine-dining room where the guests rather than the chef are the point.

Fish and shellfish make up almost the entire menu. Langoustines, turbot and king crab come from Nordic waters, and Vildgaard buys directly from fishermen and producers he knows by name. Caviar is his specialty and returns in several courses of the long tasting menu. The cooking is precise but plain to read on the plate, and the service is relaxed rather than ceremonial. Comfortable chairs and dark wooden floors fill the room, which gets plenty of natural light.

The Michelin Guide gave Jordnær its first star ten months after the opening, and a second followed two years later. In May 2024, at the Nordic guide's ceremony in Helsinki, it received a third star, which made it the third restaurant in the Copenhagen area with three stars after Noma and Geranium. Jordnær has also appeared on The World's 50 Best Restaurants list, and Eric Vildgaard has been named among the leading chefs at The Best Chef Awards.
